With a smattering of delicious new Sativa and hybrid strains hitting the store this week – I got to thinking. Does cannabis really make one more creative? Or is it more like creative people tend to use cannabis? We all know there is a ton of weed celebreties – who are as famous for their use of marijuana as they are for their own art & performances, but is cannabis what really gets the creative juices flowing?
Cannabis & the Creative Mind
Comedians and musicians, illustrators and painters, writers and poets are all groups of artists where you can’t swing a dead cat around without hitting three daily smokers. So what gives? Does that mean that if you scrawl down your stoney shower thoughts on a page you could be the next Wiz Khalifa or Joe Rogan? Well… Not quite. Cannabis is a tricky one when it comes to the subject of creativity. It can help you immensely by showing you a different perspective or give you the courage to pursue a direction your sober self may have discarded. Things become more intense and you can more easily “lose yourself” in your art.
Cannabis tends to lower your inhibitions, so the urge to “go with it” is stronger. It’s not magic creativity drug though. A study published in Consciousness and Cognition Noted that while Cannabis use was noted along with boosted creativity in people who already considered themselves creative – it didn’t increase the creativity of those who didn’t already consider themselves creative. So it seems like really what cannabis can do for you is boost output. Sparking up one of Bob’s Joints isn’t going to turn you into the next Picasso if you didn’t already have it in you – but it can definitely help!
A good way to think of it is that Cannabis isn’t the gateway to meet the Muse – But it is a great tool to help you revel in her sweet embrace for just a moment longer.
