I have been dealing with insomnia since I was a teenager. What was once a harmless practice of staying up late, watching hours of tv or playing video games, has evolved into a constant hurdle that I face on a regular basis. Staring at the ceiling as my mind races plagued me for years as a teenager. Then one day I tried cannabis. While I was well aware of the laughing and munchies that came from smoking Mary Jane, I had no idea that I was holding the key to my email insomnia in that sandwich bag.
This was decades ago, back in the wild wild west of cannabis. A time in where I had no idea of what strain I was buying, let alone if it was indica or sativa. Nowadays I can not only specify the strain and type, I can also read user reviews on their experience. Knowledge is power and there is no shortage of cannabis information available.
Thanks to the enlightenment of cannabis recently, I’ve found myself becoming a bit snobbish when it comes to my next order. I’m not just looking for anything for 100 bucks anymore, I want the shiznittlebam, snip, snap, sap ( see the movie “Half baked” if you are confused). That is to say I want the strain that knocks me out and melts away my anxious thoughts.
Knowing all of this, I am a big Indica fan. I do enjoy sativas like Bruce Banner, Green Crack, and Jack Herer on a regular basis. But as with most things, there is a time and place for everything, and for me, sativas are a daytime only thing. While we are all unique, most get a motivated or high energy buzz from sativas. To me this turns into a feeling of “don’t stop moving and thinking”. Clearly this sensation will interfere with my sleep.
So that leaves me with my favorite type of bud, the indicas or indica dominant hybrids. These are the buds that take all of my anxious or negative thoughts and push them far from my consciousness. The type of buds that pair very well with headphones, movies, and staying in for the night. While I am a fan of many other types of strains here are some of my favorites.
Girl Scout Cookies
Probably my favorite strain of all time, this hybrid is known to act like a sativa at first but it soon transitions into strong Indica sensations. For me this is the best herb to fire up at 4pm to get ready for you last “to do” items. Girl Scout Cookies give you a euphoric wave of clarity that leaves you with just the right amount of energy. That energy soon diminishes and leaves you in a calm state of mind void of any racing thoughts. This leads to a great sleep free of mental interruptions.
To be honest, I’ve never had a Kush I didn’t love. They all seem to share one common trait: a massive desire for munchies and sleep. If I start my day early with any type of Kush, I know I won’t be accomplishing much. For that reason I hold off on lighting up some Bubba.
I try to always stock up on Greasy Pink as it is one of the best strains available. I find the high lasts a long time and can result in a strong comma after consuming it. A little goes a long way as it is very potent. But if I want to zone out, forget my troubles and enjoy a sleep so deep that I don’t notice my alarm, Greasy Pink is the one for me.
All of this is to say I know that we are all different. Some might not like indica strains as much as me and some may not react to an indica the same as me. But for me, strong Indica buds can tackle any insomnia or sleep disturbances that I face. I’m sure there are some sativas that knock people out cold as well, but I have yet to find one for me. Until then, I will always have a collection of indicas to choose from.
